April 13 1939 - March 15 2017

This online memorial was created in loving memory of Charlie Rudder, whose life story is told throughout this memorial website. Please sign Charlie's guest book and let us know you came to visit. We will remember Charlie forever. Charles Frederick Rudder, 77, passed peacefully on Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at Marshall Medical Center South, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on April 13, 1939, Charlie grew up in Tennessee. He attended Roan County High School in Kingston, Carson Newman College, the University of Tennessee, and the University of Florida. He received BAE, ME, and Ed.D. degrees from the University of Florida. He taught Philosophy of Education, in the School of Education, at both Auburn University and the University of Alabama. He was known by his students as Charlie, which was indicative of the unique atmosphere he brought to the classroom, along with his vast knowledge, wit, and quirky sense of humor.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 24 years, Lana Thomas Rudder; loving daughters, Cindy (William) Simpson, Jessica (Chad) Shewmake, Amanda (Steven) Sparks, and Lydia (Wesley) Lewis; step-son, Lane (Christa) Camp; grandchildren, Jennifer (Glen) Richmann; Daniel Simpson; Alexa and Afton Shewmake; Mia and Wilder Sparks; Josey, Evie, and Miri Lewis; and Lauren Camp; siblings Allan (Carole) Rudder and Vivian King; mother-in-law Mary Thomas; brother-in-law Phillip (Claudette) Thomas; sister-in-law Lynn (Ricky) Pitt; and many other nieces, nephews and relatives. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Mary Hope Rudder, and father-in-law George A. Thomas.

As a seeker of knowledge, Charlie arranged for his body to be donated to the University of Alabama at Birmingham to further scientific research. In keeping with Charlie’s wishes, no funeral services will be held.

There will be an intimate gathering of family only, in order to honor and celebrate Charlie’s life and show tribute to his memory. The family welcomes any condolences, fond memories, anecdotes, or photos that contribute to his legacy.
